• Backgammon – Three General Plans

    [ English ]

In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic tactics employed. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

    The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you might manage, to block in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

    The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious calamity considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

    The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are extremely behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
