• Backgammon – 3 General Techniques

    [ English ]

In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 fundamental tactics used. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

    The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to block in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

    The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is then in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

    The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is moving their checkers home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
