• Backgammon – Three Main Techniques

In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 basic techniques used. You need to be agile enough to switch tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

    The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

    The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time trouble considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

    The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best locations for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
