In exceptionally general terms, there are three main strategies used. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.
The Blitz
This is composed of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don’t have other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this situation!
