• Backgammon – Three Basic Strategies

In exceptionally general terms, there are three fundamental game plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between strategies instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

    The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

    The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time calamity considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

    The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least two of your pieces.) It should be played when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
